When the temperature starts to drop we know it can be tempting to press pause on swimming lessons. But before you put the goggles away, read these reasons why continuing lessons during winter is one of the best things you can do for your child's development, safety and confidence.

Tips from the team for keeping warm this winter

Wear warm layers to and from lessons: Hoodies, dressing gowns, slippers or cosy socks are perfect.

Take advantage of our warm showers: Be sure to dry off as quickly as possible.

Use a hooded towel: To help keep swimmers warm while getting changed.

Enjoy a warm drink and snacks after: A little treat for making it to the pool can make all the difference. Our café is open during swimming lessons

Why it’s worth sticking with swimming lessons this winter

Keep progress on track

Swimming is a skill that takes time, practice, and consistency. Just like learning to read or ride a bike, swimmers need regular sessions to build their ability and confidence in the water.

Taking a break can cause swimmers to forget key techniques, lose confidence, or slip backward in their skill development. By continuing through winter, your child stays on track and keeps building on the progress they have made.

Safe summer swimming starts in winter

Attending swimming lessons throughout winter allows your child to keep learning and developing the essential life-saving skills they need to stay safe in and around water.

By continuing lessons during winter, your swimmer will head into summer with a stronger swimming ability, greater water awareness, and the confidence to enjoy the summer season safely. It’s the best way to be prepared for holidays, time at the lake or river, and beach days.

Boost focus and routine

Swimming is not just great for physical fitness, it plays a big role in supporting mental wellbeing. Staying active through winter can help swimmers manage stress, sleep better and stay focused in school.

Having a consistent weekly activity like swimming provides structure, familiarity, and something to look forward to. For many kids, that time in the water is a chance to release energy and feel proud of their efforts.

Our pools are warm

While it might be cold outside, our pools are warm and welcoming all year round. At WSAC, our Learn to Swim pool is heated to a cosy 30 to 34°C to ensure all swimmers are comfortable during every lesson. And our 25m indoor pool is heated to 27 to 29°C.

Consistency builds confidence

Swimmers thrive when they know what to expect. Keeping swimming lessons in their weekly routine builds confidence not just in the water, but in life.

Even if it feels like progress is slow, every lesson matters. Regular participation helps children feel secure, supported, and proud of what they’re achieving. Over time, this builds self-esteem, trust in their instructors, and a strong foundation for future swimming success.

Our team understands and recognise that parents and guardians pause swimming lessons during winter for a number of reasons.

If you would like to discuss your options or arrange something that works better for you and your family, please reach out to the team. We are here to help.
